Reduction of bone prominence TORUS

What is a bone prominence?

It is a bump-like protrusion around the gums and on the upper jaw bone. It gradually forms due to the accumulation of stimulation when chewing. It is mainly seen in people who clench their teeth too hard or grind their teeth. If it does not interfere with daily life, there is no need to forcefully remove it, but treatment is required in the following cases:

Cases where treatment is required

  • Those who experience pain when their dentures touch
  • Those who have difficulty making dentures due to bone protuberances
  • Those who have difficulty wearing orthodontic devices due to bone protuberances

At our clinic, surgical reduction is possible.

We have oral surgery specialists on staff at our clinic who are able to reduce bone protuberances through surgery.

Actual cases

Before

After

Age/gender
29 years old, female
Chief Complaint
I'm worried about my teeth alignment
Diagnosis
  • Narrow lower arch (narrow lower jaw)
  • Crowding (uneven teeth alignment)

Because a bony protuberance in the lower jaw was preventing the wearing of orthodontic appliances, it was determined that reduction was necessary.

Treatment content
After bilateral mandibular protuberance surgery (reducing bony protuberances), the narrowed mandibular dental arch is expanded using a bi-helix (widening the mandible using orthodontic devices) and multi-brackets are fitted (correcting the alignment of the teeth using orthodontic devices).
Progress
Currently undergoing orthodontic treatment using bi-helix and multi-brackets (as of January 2021)

Warnings

  • It takes about a month for the wound to heal after treatment.
  • Post-treatment symptoms include swelling, pain, and difficulty eating.
  • Those taking medication for osteoporosis or undergoing cancer treatment (taking anticancer drugs) may not be able to undergo surgery.
  • The surgery is available for insurance coverage.
