Mechanism of taste transmission
Taste is a sensation received by the mouth and sensed by the brain. We can sense taste when various organs such as the gustatory nerve and the brain function normally. If the sense of taste is not functioning normally, various symptoms such as lifestyle-related diseases due to malnutrition, decreased physical strength, and decreased stamina can occur.
01|Taste with your mouth
We sense taste through taste buds in our mouths. Taste buds are constantly regenerating, and nutritional deficiencies can hinder the regeneration of taste buds.
02| Transmitted through nerves
The taste cells received by the taste buds are transmitted to the brain along with oral and visceral sensations.
03| Feeling taste with your brain
Information about taste, smell, appearance, etc. is gathered in the brain and recognized as "taste."
Taste disorders
AGEUSIA
Possible taste disorder
Do you have symptoms such as not being able to taste food, always having a strange taste (bitter, sour, etc.), your family telling you that the seasoning is strange, or food tastes bad (you can't taste the umami)? If so, you may have a taste disorder. The mechanism by which we sense taste is by transmitting taste stimuli to the taste cells on the tongue, the gustatory nerves, and the brain.
The main symptoms of taste disorders
Decreased sense of taste
The taste is weak
Loss of taste
No taste at all
Spontaneous abnormal taste
Constant taste in mouth even though there is nothing there
Taste illusion
Perceiving a different taste than it actually is (e.g. sweet tastes as bitter)
Dissociative taste disorder
Can't detect certain tastes (such as sweetness)
Dry mouth (xerostomia)
DRY MOUTH
dry mouth
What is xerostomia?
Dry mouth (xerostomia) is mainly caused by a decrease in saliva secretion. Dry mouth not only causes dry mouth, but also pain and inflammation of the mucous membrane, taste disorder, bad breath, tooth decay and periodontal disease, so we recommend that you seek treatment as soon as possible.
Professor Takatsugu Sasano of Tohoku University is using new methods to diagnose and treat dry mouth based on his many years of research. Some of his latest research results have been widely introduced on television and in newspapers. At our hospital, we treat taste disorders and dry mouth under the guidance of Professor Sasano.
