Tokushinkai

Aiming to
be a pioneering dental care group

The Tokushinkai Group began in 1981 in the former Niitsu City, Niigata Prefecture (now Akiha Ward, Niigata City), a small rural town with a population of around 6. We started out as a small dental clinic like any other, with three treatment units and six staff members, but since our founding we have always continued to pursue the ideal form of patient-centered dental care.
Furthermore, from the early days of our founding, we have had doubts about the outdated, state-dependent dental industry, and have aimed to create an organization that contributes to the nation, with the aim of "creating the world's best dental care group."
As of April 45, 2025 years after its founding, the company has grown into an organization with 10 locations worldwide, employing over 102 staff members representing 10 nationalities. In Japan, it has become a large dental medical group, treating approximately 1,400 patients annually, which is equivalent to approximately 0.3% of the total number of dental patients in the country.
In the field of dental technology, we have manufacturing bases and design centers in Japan, the United States (LA and Dallas), Myanmar, and Thailand (Bangkok), and are involved in the production of dental prostheses for countries around the world.
The Tokushinkai Group will continue to develop people and organizations that will help restore confidence and vitality to Japan through the field of dental care.

General risks and side effects of treatment

General risks and side effects associated with orthodontic treatment

  • ・The typical cost of orthodontic treatment is between 60 and 150 yen, with a typical treatment period of 2 to 3 years and 24 to 36 treatment sessions. This will vary depending on the devices used, symptoms, and progress of treatment, so please use this as a guide only and consult your dentist for details.
  • -Because we place emphasis on functionality and aesthetics, this is a private treatment that is not covered by public health insurance and is more expensive than insurance-covered treatment.
  • ・At first, you may experience discomfort or pain from the orthodontic appliances. You will usually get used to them within a few days to one to two weeks.
  • ・The treatment period varies depending on the case, but for adult orthodontics or when all permanent teeth have erupted, it generally takes 1.5 to 3 years. For pediatric orthodontics, the first stage of treatment, which is carried out during the mixed dentition period (when baby teeth and permanent teeth are mixed), may take 1 to 2 years, and the second stage, which is carried out after all permanent teeth have erupted, may take 1 to 2.5 years.
  • - Because tooth movement varies from person to person, treatment may take longer than expected.
  • - Patient cooperation is extremely important during orthodontic treatment, including how to handle devices and intermaxillary elastics, and regular visits to the clinic, and these factors will affect the results and duration of treatment.
  • During treatment, the appliances make it difficult to brush your teeth. This increases the risk of cavities and periodontal disease, so it is important to brush your teeth carefully and visit the dentist for regular maintenance. Also, as your teeth move, cavities that were previously invisible may become visible.
  • ・Moving your teeth can cause the roots to be absorbed and shortened. Also, your gums may recede.
  • In rare cases, the tooth may become fused to the bone and become immobile.
  • - In very rare cases, moving teeth can damage nerves, causing them to die.
  • During treatment, you may experience allergic reactions to metals, etc.
  • During treatment, you may experience temporomandibular joint symptoms such as clicking in the temporomandibular joint, jaw pain, and difficulty opening your mouth.
  • If problems arise, the original treatment plan may be changed.
  • We may need to adjust the shape of your teeth or fine-tune your bite.
  • - There is a risk of accidentally swallowing the orthodontic device.
  • - When removing the device, there is a possibility that microcracks may appear in the enamel or parts of the prosthesis (such as crowns) may be damaged.
  • - After the device is removed, if the retainer is not used as instructed, there is a high possibility of relapse.
  • -After the device is removed, it may be necessary to create prosthetics (such as crowns) to suit your current bite, or to redo any cavity treatment.
  • As your jaw grows and develops, your teeth and bite may change.
  • - After treatment, the alignment of your teeth and your bite may change due to the influence of your wisdom teeth.
  • - The alignment of your teeth and your bite may change due to aging or periodontal disease.
  • Once orthodontic treatment begins, it is difficult to reverse the condition.

Common risks and side effects associated with mouthpiece orthodontics (Invisalign)

  • -Because we place emphasis on functionality and aesthetics, this is a private treatment that is not covered by public health insurance and is more expensive than insurance-covered treatment.
  • - If you do not wear the braces correctly and for more than 20 hours a day, you may not achieve the desired treatment results, so proper self-management is essential.
  • -Since you can remove it yourself, it may get lost.
  • ・Depending on the symptoms, treatment with a mouthpiece-type orthodontic device (Invisalign) may not be possible.
  • Depending on the condition of your mouth, you may not achieve the results you expect from your treatment plan.
  • Drinking sugary drinks while wearing your dentures can increase your risk of developing cavities.
  • Treatment may rarely result in root resorption or gingival recession.
  • -If you have a strong habit of clenching your teeth, your back teeth may not be able to bite.
  • During treatment, it may be necessary to change to treatment using wires.
  • Depending on the condition of your mouth, you may need an auxiliary orthodontic device in addition to the mouthpiece-type orthodontic device (Invisalign).
  • After treatment is complete, you will need to wear a retainer to prevent relapse.
  • ・This is a medical device that has not yet been approved under the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act. In Japan, it is not subject to the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act and may not be covered by the relief measures for adverse drug reactions.

Regarding "Invisalign," a medical device not approved under the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act

  • The mouthpiece-type orthodontic device (Invisalign) offered at our clinic is a medical device that has not yet been approved under the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act (Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act), but our clinic recognizes its effectiveness and has introduced it.
    • ◦Unapproved medical device
It has not been approved under the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Act (last confirmed on the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency website on September 11, 2024).
    • ◦ Acquisition route, etc.
Obtained from Align Technology, Inc. and Invisalign Japan Co., Ltd.
    • ◦ Information on safety in other countries
Due to a lack of information, we are unable to state here any information regarding the safety of mouthpiece-type orthodontic devices (Invisalign) in other countries. Serious risks and side effects may be reported in the future.
    • ◦Not covered by the Pharmaceutical Adverse Reaction Relief System or the Biological Product Infection Relief System
In the unlikely event that health damage occurs due to side effects or infections caused by viruses, etc., caused by drugs, medical devices (limited to biological products), and regenerative medicine products approved and manufactured and sold in Japan, public relief systems such as the "Drug Adverse Reaction Relief System" and the "Biological Product Infection Relief System" will apply. However, the use of unapproved drugs, medical devices, and regenerative medicine products will not be covered by relief. Furthermore, even if a drug, medical device, or regenerative medicine product is approved and manufactured and sold, as a general rule, it will not be covered by relief if it is not used in accordance with the prescribed efficacy, effects, usage, dosage, and precautions for use. In Japan, orthodontic devices are not subject to the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act and are therefore not covered by the Drug Adverse Reaction Relief System.
    • *No one involved with this website is responsible for the accuracy of the information in the warnings regarding advertisements for treatments using unapproved drugs and medical devices.

General risks and side effects associated with treatment using the 3D intraoral scanner (iTero)

  • ・It is a medical device approved under the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act (Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act). It optically takes an impression of the oral cavity and displays it on a display for use in medical treatment and explanations to patients, and the acquired 3D data is used in the design and manufacturing of mouthpiece-type orthodontic devices (Invisalign) and prosthetic appliances.
  • - Treatment using a mouthpiece-type orthodontic device (Invisalign) performed using a 3D intraoral scanner (iTero) emphasizes functionality and aesthetics, so it is a private treatment that is not covered by public health insurance and is more expensive than insurance-covered treatment.
  • - The discomfort during impression taking is significantly reduced compared to traditional impression taking using impression material, but since the scanner is placed inside your mouth, you may experience some discomfort in rare cases.

Risks and side effects of 3D simulation (Clincheck)

  • ・It is a medical device approved under the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act. 3D images are used to check treatment plans for orthodontic appliance manufacturing, and to issue instructions for changes, obtain approvals, and explain the process to patients.
    • - Treatment using mouthpiece-type orthodontic devices (Invisalign) is performed using 3D simulation software (Clincheck software), and because it emphasizes functionality and aesthetics, it is a private treatment that is not covered by public health insurance and is more expensive than insured treatment.
    • - The same treatment results will not be obtained regardless of which orthodontist is in charge, and treatment will not necessarily proceed according to the simulation.
    • -This is only a simulation, so if tooth movements that are difficult to actually perform are incorporated, there is a possibility that the teeth may protrude from the bone and the gums may recede.
